My Teenage Self 2
Days of media school;
Like I said, I'm not your regular teenage girl, I finished high school at age 14. My mum wasn't ready to send her 14year old daughter to the university. As far as she was concerned, I was a child. I took the regular exams though, I passed, I really did, but University of Ilorin answered my mum's unspoken prayers, and I didn't get the admission. Next step: what to do for a year: Blank
Long story short, I got admission into a media school. Formerly Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, but now National Broadcast Academy. To an extent, that school made me grow up fast. I got in to study Journalism, then later, Presentation ( TV and Radio). I've always wanted to be a mass communicator, so it was dream come true, and in my petty mind, I was no longer interested in the university.
NBA is a media school that trains people as media personnels. Everything to know in the media world is taught there. Both the On air works, and the behind the scenes technicalities.
NBA was fun,really. I met way older guys. I was officially the youngest, in the whole school( Except there was someone I knew nothing about). I met people in the media industry who have been working there since I was born, if not before. They either needed a promotion, and had to get the certificate, hence their being there. Me being Praise, I hid my age under appearance and charisma, and could pass for 21, which was still young but not wrong. I was 15,then.
Journalism was interesting, lecturers, lectures, projects, fieldwork, I was fulfilled.
Presentation class, was dream come true, strengthened my spoken English and vocabulary. In that school, famous or not, once you're there, you're just a student. Used the opportunity, and interacted with everybody like we were mates, added the respect though. I had more friends than I ever had.
Internship during both programs was the height for me. Interning on the island was a whole new world. I wrote my first major script as a journalist, field work, gathering and monitoring news on the waves, the news room and its madness. Voice of Nigeria and Radio Nigeria was my placement. I was thrilled
As a presenter, my first time on air, that day, nobody heard the last of it, at home. I was all over the place with excitement. Cool fm, Wazobia fm, Nigeria info was where I was posted. Few days in all 3 places. Meeting top presenters,musicians,actors. Wow!!!!!!! I learnt a lot. Very few people knew my age, and maybe they still don't believe it, but I was 15, almost 16.
Real internship started at 16 in Eko fm, Lagos. Every day, the 4pm shift. Well, this was the end of university in my head, until my father bursted my bubble, about a year after, and I had to get Jamb form.
Life is not always fair, but in its unfairness, you've got to make it look and become good.
I'm a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, studying History and international relations, but my experience as a mass communicator can never be erased. Oh, I'm still going back to that field after school. While I push being a diplomat.
